The former 20th pick of the New York Knicks in the 2006 NBA draft , Renaldo Balkman has been permanently banned from playing in the PBA. Not only this, but the Petron Blaze import was also fined a hefty P250,000. This comes after the incident during the Petron Blaze’s game against the Alaska Aces wherein Balkman harassed several refs, shoved teammate Ronald Tubid and choked teammate Arwind Santos.
But is the permanent ban on Balkman appropriate? Our resident “analysts” here at BehindtheBack.org chimes in on this hot topic!
Agree and disagree. Disagree kase if you think about the extent of the damage nung ginawa niya, it seems like an overreaction. Wala naman nasaktan e. Yung pinaka-famous or infamous na insidente ng on-court violence ay obviously yung “Malice in the Palace” kung saan sumugod si Artest Formerly Known as Ron sa stands at nanapak ng fan. He basically started a brawl! He was suspended for 86 games but he wasn’t banned for life. Short of actually killing someone during a game, does it get any worse than that? But in a way I agree with the decision kase we want to make it a precedent sa ibang imports na you can’t do that to local players. Dayo ka dito e. Hurt a local and it becomes a race thing that can easily lead into an arena-wide brawl. I think the ruling is too harsh but I can live with it. It’s not as if you robbed the guy of his livelihood anyway. Marami namang ibang liga kung saan pwede siyang manakal.
Disagree! Masyado strikto for me. teammate niya yung inaway niya di naman iba e. labo for me. I get the “players are role models” shit, but a ban for life is just too much.
Agree! Balkman’s actions should definitely merit a suspension, but the penalty imposed by the league may have been too harsh. a couple of days off and a hefty fine might be enough, but a lifetime ban from the leaguemight be an exaggeration. Given the fact na obviously very open naman si Balkman regarding his apologies (sa team and specifically kay Arwind mismo), decision na siguro ng San Mig yun if they want to add dun sa disciplinary sanction imposed by the league him, or ultimately magpalit ng import.
Disagree. But seriously, it was really unfortunate for him for his meltdown happen in front of national television. I think naging factor rin sa decision yung not so good past niya (headbutting incident in the FIBAs). And if anything, this is just to a show of force by the commissioner. It also serves as a warning to incoming imports and local players alike.
